Building a Question Bank

The question bank holds every quiz question for your site. You can have Mason write questions from your documents, write them yourself, or mix both.

Go to Training → Quizzes. The left side has 3 views: Quizzes, Questions, and Create Questions. The last two are covered here.

Question Types

TypeHow It Works
True / FalseA statement that’s either true or false.
Single choice5 options (A to E), exactly 1 correct.
Multiple choice5 options (A to E), 2 to 4 correct. The user has to pick all of them.

Option E can be a special answer:

  • All of the above is available in single choice questions only.
  • None of the above is available in single and multiple choice. When it’s the right answer, it’s the only right answer.

When someone takes a quiz, the options are shuffled. “All of the above” and “None of the above” always stay last.

Generating Questions from Documents

  1. Open the Create Questions view on the left and click Generate questions.
  2. Choose which documents to use: All documents, or Choose documents to pick specific ones. You can search the list by title.
  3. Optionally enter a Topic (see below).
  4. Set the Number of questions.
  5. Tick the Question types you want. Mason tries for a roughly even mix.
  6. Optionally add Custom instructions, such as “Focus on ramps and dock safety. Our dock ramps are 8% grade.”
  7. Click Generate.

The request shows up in the list on that view. New questions land in the question bank when it finishes.

How many questions to ask for

Rivvex suggests up to 3 questions per page and fills in a starting number for you. The most you can ask for in 1 request is 200.

You can go above 3 per page, and you’ll see a warning when you do. Past that point, questions start to overlap or get picky.

Using a topic

A topic narrows the request to the pages that cover it. Type something like “Operating a handheld saw” and Rivvex searches your documents for matching pages.

  • The form shows how many pages matched, and in which documents, before you submit.
  • If nothing matches, you’ll see No pages matched this topic. Try different wording or choose different documents.
  • Up to 200 of the best-matching pages are used.

Leave the topic empty to use every page of the documents you chose.

Topic and custom instructions do different jobs. The topic decides which pages Mason reads. Custom instructions tell Mason how to write, or what to emphasize.

Request statuses

StatusWhat It Means
QueuedWaiting to start.
In progressMason is reading the pages and writing questions. Large requests can take several minutes.
CompletedDone. The row shows how many questions were added and how many were skipped (duplicates and questions that failed checks).
Completed with errorsSome questions were added, but part of the request failed. What was added is kept.
FailedNothing was added. The row shows why. You can submit the request again.

Mason is told which questions already exist for those documents, so repeat requests add new questions rather than the same ones.

Writing a Question Yourself

  1. Click Write a question.
  2. Pick the type and enter the question.
  3. For choice questions, fill in the 5 options and mark the correct ones.
  4. Add an explanation of why the answer is right. Users see this after they pass.
  5. Optionally link the question to a document and page numbers.
  6. Save.

Verified and Unverified

Verified is a label that says someone has checked the question. It’s there to help you sort and filter.

  • Questions Mason writes start as unverified.
  • Questions you write start as verified.
  • You can verify or unverify 1 question from its edit form, or select several and use Verify or Mark unverified.

Unverified questions can still be used in quizzes. If you only want checked questions, turn on Verified only when you’re adding questions to a quiz.

Finding Questions

Search by question text and filter by verified status. Click See all filters to also filter by type, source document, and status (active or archived).

Each row shows the question, its type, where it came from, and which quizzes use it. Click Show answer to see the options, the correct answer, and the explanation.

Editing Questions

Click Edit on any question. Quizzes always use the current version of a question, so an edit shows up the next time someone starts an attempt.

Attempts already taken aren’t affected. Each attempt keeps a copy of the questions as they were shown.

Archiving Questions

Questions are archived, never deleted. That keeps past results intact.

  1. Select 1 or more questions.
  2. Click Archive.
  3. If any of them are used in quizzes, choose whether to also remove them from those quizzes.

To bring a question back, filter by Archived, select it, and click Restore.

What Happens When a Document Changes

  • You replace or re-upload a document: existing questions stay exactly as they are.
  • You delete a document: its questions stay in the bank. They no longer show a source.
